Clipa Theater is proud to host Japanese choreographer and dancer Nobuyoshi Asai on his visit to Israel with the new show REI and unique artist workshops!

Nobuyoshi Asai, a former member of butoh troupe Sankai Juku, returns to Clipa for a one-time performance of his new creation – ‘REI’.

REI engages in choice, decision making, balance and time. It is centered around the metaphor of a balance that weighs the different outcomes of every choice we have. You can watch the scales go up and down infinitely, without ever making a decision, expecting that time will bring the solution.

The piece criticizes the concept of time being controlled by someone, who can take life away and will ultimately break the balance for you. Of life as video game, in which refusing to play just means you are running out of time, running out of energy, until the game is over.

REI pursuits to dominate the rules to this difficult game. It looks for the keys to open the door to the next level, driven by your own will and answers, and continue towards the world that is being unveiled in front of us.

The show will take place on Thursday, 19.03.2020 at 20:30.
Duration: 50 minutes

About the workshop

Butoh is a movement language that has evolved in Japan and includes a definite collection of movement treasure, movement qualities, and poetic and visual imagery, and deals with the connection between the dancer’s conscious experience and the audience. Today, butoh is considered a movement that criticizes on the one hand traditions and “sacred cows” and on the other hand the modern world for its cultural and social conventions while offering an alternative consciousness experience. Butoh often has a meditative mood characterized by a different time experience, which is created by slowing down on stage to such an extent that the movement of the dancers is almost indistinguishable.

During his stay in Israel, Nobuyoshi Asai will teach two botanical workshops based on the Sankai Joko method, the workshop will consist of different experiences and techniques with emphasis on listening here and now, body and heart.

* You can choose between two dates: Tuesday 17.03.2020 or Wednesday, 18.03.2020

* The workshop takes 3 hours, from 18:00 to 21:00

* Registration is limited to 16 participants in each workshop

Nobuyoshi Asai began dancing in Japan at the age of ten, and began his professional career after winning the first World Hip Hop Championship award in 2002. In 2005, he joined the Japanese butoh band Dairakudakan and then joined as a regular dancer with Sankai Juku, with which he performed worldwide. At the same time, in 2011, the Pola Art Foundation awarded him grants to continue his choreography and art studies in Berlin, to weave connections between Japanese cultural backgrounds and contemporary creative movements. The following year, he obtained the Japanese government education program for artists and spent a year in Tel Aviv, joining Batsheva and collaborating with the alternative artistic environment of the Clipa and Maria Kong.
